This Online Balint Group meets live by video conference for eight sessions which will allow each participant at least one chance to present a case. The format gives participants the chance to learn about what gets in the way of their having more meaningful relationships with patients and to discern authentic responses that will lessen those obstacles. Research validates the importance of empathetic relationships with patients in providing effective healthcare, and in what practitioners find most meaningful about their work. The Balint groups case-based focus on alternative formulations rather than problem-solving makes it applicable to myriad situations and care settings. The Balint format also provides practice in the skills of accessing intuition and empathizing with others, and allows meaningful connection among practitioners of different disciplines who experience the importance of treatment alliances.
Suitable for those in active practice, including physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners and others. No prior Balint experience required.

Requirements:
Balint work can stir strong emotions. If the registrant is at an unusually stressful period in their life, we may recommend they sign up at another time. Contact the faculty of the group you are interested in if you are unsure. Because the success of the group depends in part on cohesion, steady attendance matters. Our lives are busy, and missing a session may occasionally be unavoidable. We ask that registrants intend to attend all sessions of the group.
1. Registrants must be clinically active and willing to present cases.

Health care professionals are invited to attend the Healing, Mindfulness and Compassion Retreat at the beautiful and tranquil Ratna Ling Conference Center in the Redwoods of Sonoma County, California. The weekend conference combines Eastern and Western approaches to healing: Tibetan Yoga and Meditation as well as Balint sessions that address the complex emotional landscape of the clinician-patient relationship. The Balint group format is an empathy-enhancing practice to strengthen treatment alliances, improve care delivery, increase practitioner resilience and decrease professional isolation. Further context on the neuroscience of compassion and its importance in the provision of effective service will increase understanding of the connection between practitioners’ self-care and the care they are able to offer others. The accommodations and architecture are exquisite and the weekend is educational, restful, and rejuvenating. more info...

Cultivating Understanding and Compassion Through Balint
The International Balint Federation (IBF) is composed of 28 societies around the globe which represent varied cultures, historical backgrounds, languages and healthcare systems. While we celebrate our diversity, we acknowledge that we have much to learn from each other. Particularly when we face challenging times, it may help us to examine how Balint Groups work and what gets in their way. We will examine the ways Balint promotes the cultivation of understanding and compassion in our varied settings and experiences. We will accomplish this learning through paper presentations, workshops and rich fellowship. Please join us at The Colorado Chautauqua, a national historic landmark at the base of the Flatiron Mountains for:
Five (5) longitudinal Balint Group sessions.
Paper presentations, poster sessions and workshops.
Continuing education credit (APA and AAFP/AMA).
A rich program of cultural and nature activities for registrants and guests.
Opportunities for networking and relaxation in a beautiful environment.
